Wondering about something others might wonder about as well?
Do I need a partner?
No, in social dancing (unlike ballroom) we all help each other learn by constantly rotating partners during the class. This helps us troubleshoot, adjust, drill and get immediate feedback of our motions no matter who we are dancing with.
Can I stay with my partner?
In group classes, we all switch partners to help each other learn. If you prefer to only dance with one partner, please contact me about private lessons, which are also available.
What should I wear (clothes and shoes)?
Wear comfortable clothing that allows others to see where your legs and feet are moving (so avoid really loose baggy pants and very long dresses or skirts).
For shoes, bring indoor shoes that do not have sticky soles (no running or sports sneakers, please). For the intro level, feel free to take the class in your socks, if you prefer (brownie points if they are fun socks).
Do I need to bring anything?
You can bring a bottle with water, hand sanitizer and an extra shirt, if you know you sweat a lot.
How long are lessons?
Unless otherwise indicated, lessons are 55-60 minutes long.
Which style of salsa should I learn first?
LA-style Salsa, also known as Salsa-on-1, is the most widely danced salsa in Canada and the United States. It has one basic step and you can easily find people dancing it to practice at Latin socials where salsa music is played.
Casino (Salsa Cubana), on the other side, has at least 4 basic steps and fewer people dance it. A natural progression would be to take up Salsa LA-style first and, if curious, dive into Casino afterwards.
Should I take private or group lessons?
This is up to you and your goals. Group classes are fun, social, and inexpensive. They tend to be weekly, so your life schedule matters. Private lessons can be adjusted to your schedule, allow you to work at your desired pace and frequency, and can be pricier. You do not have to choose one or the other, as you could join a group class and every so often have a private lesson to work on specific concerns or drills.
